The students will create a box plot through completing a worksheet that is assigned individually.
The student will utilize the technology, ToonDoo, effectively.

and there will also be a worksheet that will be completed individually and in small groups.

LESSON ACTIVITIES (COMPLETE 1-8)
STEP 1. Anticipatory Set: (Motivation/Assessment of Prior Knowledge) 5 min
Explain why box plots are useful, stating what you can get from just looking at the figure, and
relaying how organized information can make situations a whole lot simpler.
STEP 2. Overview of learning outcomes to pupils: 1 minute
By the end of the lesson, each student will be able to create their own box plot and interpret the
information.
ToonDoo will also be used to organize what is learned.
STEP 3. Input of information: 15 minutes
Short lecture of box plots and what the quartile ranges are by using an overhead and an overhead graphing calculator.
STEP 4. Modeling/Examples: 15 minutes
Write on board example of how to do a problem, show from overhead how to do a problem.
Also, explain in class how to create a ToonDoo and create one in front of the class, bring in the
final copy to show the class. Explain that this will be used for homework and we will touch on
this activity at the end of class.
STEP 5. Checking for Understanding: 5 minutes
Short worksheet where students work in a small group of 2 or 3 to complete (incorporate colored
pencils to differentiate the different quartiles).
Teacher will walk around and make sure class is doing it right.
STEP 6. Guided Practice: 10 minutes
Ask students to come up to the front of the class to demonstrate what they did and explain to
their classmates how they did it (colored dry erase markers may be used).
STEP 7. Independent Practice: (Assignment may be part of closure - Step 8) 10 minutes
A worksheet for students to do individually will be passed out and it would serve as a pass out the
door. The worksheet will contain higher level questions that involves more thinking and analyzing to assess
how well the students really comprehended the information.
STEP 8. Closure: 4 minutes
Summary of lesson, reference to tomorrow’s work, and assignment of independent practices.
The independent practice will be homework that asks the class to create their own ToonDoo which
explains through a summary what the importance of a box plot, the steps, etc.

overhead graphing calculator
